SOLENT STARS II 61
FILTON FLYERS 81

This was a very tough game to start the new season. The majority of the team were members of the Bristol Bombers team until their demise two seasons ago. Filton Sports Academy is a superb brand new facility with a wooden floor. Later in the season their Academy side with play Solent in the same division.

Having beaten 2nd Division Bath by 20 points in the National Cup last week, the Filton team were expected to run away with this game. They certainly beat Solent but did not outplay them.

Solent had only one player present from last year's winning team, Larry Rowe, and he started with two members of Solent Juniors of last year, John Titcombe and Craig Teesdale. Along with Alex Byrne and Chris Watson they tore into the much bigger and very tough defenders and after 5 minutes were leading 17-5 and playing some slick basketball.

This prompted Filton to bring the former Solent Star and 6’8” Panji Grainger off the bench along with 6’10” Abe Ahmed and that made a huge difference. Suddenly the very active “boxing out” of the small Solent side proved ineffective against such height and sheer bulk with Ahmed proving very productive. Gareth Till who also had a short spell at Solent alongside Grainger was also banging in 3-pointers as the inside outside game gradually turned the game to Filton.

Solent still led after the first quarter , 22-19, but the second quarter showed what was to come with the power of the Filton side gradually dominating the game. The experience of Watson and Byrne kept things ticking along and Solent turned around 45-37 down.

Then the lack of pre-season training and games took their toll with Solent only scoring 9 points in the third. Watson had some great duels with Grainger as he went to the basket and ended up with 20 points in the game. Rowe scored 12 points but lacked concentration in the second half - but showed his promise throughout.

Solent actually won the last quarter 15-13 and finished strongly with Laurent Rossi and Marty Page both making their debuts and each showing some neat touches.

Scorers: Rossi 2, Teesdale 6, Smithson 3, Rowe 12, Watson 20, Duke 2, Byrne 5, Titcombe 9, Page 2.

SOLENT STARS II 50
TAUNTON TIGERS 75

This was a miserable shooting performance from the Solent 2nd Team as they came up against a very defensive minded Tigers team.

The game was evenly balanced in the first quarter with Taunton hitting a 3-pointer on the buzzer to separate the teams at 18-22.

Andy Aung returned to training earlier in the week, only to declare he was unfit to play. Larry Rowe was away on holiday.

Jon Rumsey, Solent’s veteran captain, returned to the team and brought some stability back to the team at both ends of the court. Rumsey scored 7 points and Craig Teesdale 8 points in the 1st quarter. Alex Byrne banged in trademark 3-pointer.

Solent started the 2nd quarter with more gusto, but when Mike Peel scored with 3-pointer to put Solent 24-21 up, the scoring stopped, although the chances were there with easy lay-ups, Solent failed to score again until the last minute of the quarter. Tigers had scored 25 in that period to leave Solent effectively out of the game at 27-44 down.

There was a vast improvement in the second half mainly down to the outstanding defensive effort put in by Carl Duke but still the Solent inside men failed to make any impression on the game, they only scored 11 points between them.

In every other facet of the game Solent matched the well fancied West Country team, the exception was the scoring with Taunton scoring 60% of their field goals and 55% of their free throws to Solent’s 28% field goal and only 33% from the line.

SOLENT STARS II 106
SWINDON SONICS 75

Solent enjoyed their first win of the season beating Swindon Sonics by 106-75.

Swindon were no pushover in the early stages and had “Man Mountain”, Matt Everitt, at 7’1” the tallest man in National Basketball in the centre position. He caused problems at first but Chris Watson and John Titcombe played very tight defence on him and restricted him to just 5 points. Everitt became very frustrated at this close attention and fouled out on a technical foul in the 3rd quarter.

Solent had started very slowly but took off when team captain Jon Rumsey hit a big 3 pointer. Watson, Craig Teesdale and Alex Byrne scored in a 12-point spell, which saw Solent into a 26-13 lead. Mike Peel although not scoring played some great defence and ran the team with flair.

In the second quarter Solent extended their advantage as Titcombe found the way inside and Larry Rowe started hitting from the outside. Yaz El-Hakim and Carl Duke came off the bench to continue the aggression on defence. Duke kept American player coach Richard Moses under control. Moses was always prominent in all Swindon’s best moves.

With Solent leading 60-39 they became complacent and when Swindon switched to a zone press defence at the restart it threw them out of their game.

Swindon outscored Solent 16-2 and came within 7 points, at 62-55. But a quick timeout reminded Solent of their duties in this situation and order was restored and Solent then scored 14 points without reply.

The last quarter was all Solent and Laurent Rossi and James Chubb came into the game with Peel and the other young players Titcombe and Teesdale, joint top scorers with 18 points, ran away with the game for an easy win.

Team and point scorers: Rossi, Teesdale 18, Peel 4, Titcombe 18, Chubb 2, Al-Hakim 6, Rowe 14, Duke 6, Byrne 14, Watson 15 and Rumsey 11.

SOLENT STARS II 90
GLOUCESTER GIANTS 62

Solent introduced Ian Manley for his first game of the season, as Laurent Rossi was attending a Coach Level 2 course.

Solent found the Giants a handful in the first quarter as both teams played with little control, 22 –22 the score.

Craig Teesdale started the game as he normally does, scoring 7 of the first 11 points. Chris Watson was also producing some hard drives to basket against the very active Giants defence.

The second quarter started 22 – 22 but when Solent switched to zone defence it completely baffled the Gloucester team and they only scored 7 points in the quarter.

Solent were driven forward by Mike Peel, Alex Byrne and Teesdale and they scored 20 to seal the game. Jon Rumsey and John Titcombe were also prominent.

Solent then played their best basketball of the game soon increasing their lead to around twenty points. Watson, Byrne, Rowe, Rumsey and Teesdale were all at their most aggressive and skilful. The younger players were then introduced into the game, James Chubb was prominent and had his career high with 7 points. However, the drive was missing until the final quarter when Solent stepped their effort and with Teesdale running hard eased home.

Solent and scorers: Teesdale 23 points, Peel 2, Manley 3, Titcombe 8, Chubb 7, Al-Hakim 6, Rowe 6, Byrne 8, Watson 16, Rumsey 8. Kelly and Duke.

SOLENT STARS II 45
EAST KENT CRUSADERS 71

The game started very slowly with East Kent looking good. They were virtually the same side as last season when they finished in third place in the 3rd Division East. Solent beat them 3 times during the course of that season.

East Kent have recruited the 6'10" Canadian Walter Moyse and were much bigger all round than Solent this time. Solent were gritty in defence as they pulled back a 8 point lead with a 2 big 3 pointers and 2 free shots from Alex Byrne, then 3 foul shot points from Larry Rowe and1 from Yaz Al-Hakim. This left them 9-14 down at the end of the first quarter, a very low score.

A switch of defence to a 1-2-2 zone confused the Kent outfit and Solent got some steals which they converted into points with Neil Kelly and Mike Peel taking the opportunity to get some court time as Solent's regular scorers were very quiet on the night. Solent led by 32-26 at the break. Solent were given the benefit of the refereeing calls during this period but this evened itself out in the second half. The defensive effort was full tilt with the five of Byrne, Kelly, Peel, Chris Watson and Jon Rumsey working as a unit.

The second half was very different with Solent only scoring 13 points, 6 in the third quarter and 7 in the fourth. This was the lowest score in this team's short history.

East Kent stepped their defence and with Moyse finding his confidence with every minute as he and Butters dominated the boards at each end, out rebounding Solent by 67-42.These 2 pulled down 30 rebounds between them.

Solent had the shots but failed to hit the target (with a percentage of less than 20% from the field) as they were rushed by the excellent Kent defence.

SOLENT STARS II 54
BOGNOR PIRATES 51

Although the scores would suggest there was little for the crowd to cheer this was a very tense and exiting game that Solent that was up for grabs right until the end. With just under 2 minutes to go in the game Solent pulled themselves together and although down by 8 points, snatched a win from a very disappointed Bognor side.

Martin Gore the Bognor centre at 6’9” had dominated the defensive boards and made it very difficult for the Solent inside men to score. Time and time again he forced the inexperienced Solent players to change their shot. Even when Solent shot from outside they could not find their range. The normally reliable Craig Teesdale was sadly out of form and only scored 1 three pointer in the last quarter.

Teesdale and Mike Peel were forced to run the game as Alex Byrne was pulled out of the game early on with a sore thumb.

Larry Rowe had kept Solent in touch for most of the game scoring two big three pointers in the third quarter and came up with crucial points in the last.

Jon Rumsey and Chris Watson both played well pulling down the rebounds on their own board. Watson played the whole game and scored good baskets inside with some strong cuts to the hoop.

Solent started the last quarter just one point behind but three pointers from Barnes and Bunten saw the Bognor lead extended and player coach Paul Sparrowhawk sank another. Watson and Rowe replied and then Sparrowhawk struck again and with the scores 51-43 came the big finish.

Teesdale 3, Rowe 2, a free throw from Watson, and Peel scored a 3 pointer to take Solent into the lead (52-51). Jon Rumsey was fouled and scored 1 point from the line. Bognor - with just 14 seconds left - needed to score and turned the ball over with a travelling violation in the backcourt. Solent put the ball into court and Bognor fouled Mike Peel who scored 1 of his 2 shots, the score now 51-54. This left Bognor with time for one shot by Paul Sparrowhawk, but Chris Watson got a piece of the ball and the buzzer went.

Scorers: - Rowe 16, Watson 12, Rumsey 9, Peel 6, Byrne 5, Teesdale 3 and Titcombe 3

SOLENT STARS II 60
CARDIFF CLIPPERS 68

Solent had another very frustrating game against a very well organised and experienced Cardiff Clippers. Cardiff were the smallest team Solent have played this season, and they arrived with only 7 players. They were by a long way the best shooters they had seen, especially Jones who scored all his points in 3-pointers.

Cardiff controlled the game from start to finish as Solent were knocked out of their rhythm and failed to execute their own well-rehearsed moves due to some excellent defence.

An up and down first quarter saw Solent unable to hit their openings whilst the Cardiff side were hitting their shots with apparent ease, especially Jones who hit 2 big 3-pointers.

Chris Watson was the only one to score with any regularity for Solent. In the second quarter Solent fought back and with 1 minute to go pulled back to 26-27 after playing a very tight zone defence. But their concentration levels fell away and they allowed Cardiff to stretch their lead to 8 points at the half.

Jon Rumsey led the fight back in the third and although he had a huge battle with the Cardiff player coach Chris Horrocks, a former GB player, he had a big influence on the scoring with 17 points in the match. The score at the end of the quarter was 46-49.

Solent then levelled the score at 56 all and looked good but then Cardiff spent the next 5 minutes on the free throw line scoring 9 from 14 shots that sealed the game for the Welsh outfit.

Solent Scorers: Rumsey 17, Watson 14, Titcombe 10, Rowe 6, Teesdale 7, Peel 4, and Byrne 3.

19 November 2005

SOLENT STARS II 61
UWIC STEALERS 67

Solent returned to Fleming Park in the early hours of Sunday very disappointed side. They had overcome thick fog both ways of the journey and come to terms at UWIC with the atrocious carpet floor and two tired referees that were refereeing their second game in row.

Southampton’s Gary Beale made his debut in the NBL and had a very impressive game.

It took Solent a long time to find their feet on the carpet floor and this definitely inhibited their fast break as the floor slowed on the bounce. It was only in the last quarter that Solent came to terms with the court, but having missed 16 free throws in the game and 6 in the last quarter they could have no complaints.

In the first half Solent only scored 27 points and it was to their credit that their defence kept UWIC to 30.

Craig Teesdale and Alex Byrne scored the majority of those points with John Titcombe finding his range in the second.

John Salmon raised the spirits of Solent when he pulled down a long pass from John Rumsey and with an excellent move converted for 2 points with some deft footwork. Neil Kelly was very active in the zone defence and Rumsey kept pulling down the rebounds.

Solent, after a really bad third quarter, came out ready to play in the last. Gary Beale played excellent defence on the UWIC guards. This, for the first time in the game, gave the initiative to Solent.

Titcombe 8 points, Byrne 4, Chris Watson 5 and Beale brought the scores to 62-60. When the tallest man in the game, Priddle, fouled out in the last minute it seemed that Solent could win the game. Cardiff had other ideas and scored their last five points in free shots as Solent chased the game.

Scorers: Titcombe 19, Byrne 13, Watson 8, Teesdale 8, Kelly 4, Beale 4, Rumsey 3 and Salmon 2

SOLENT STARS II 100
GLOUCESTER GIANTS 81

Solent played only one of their new signings in Steve Davison and had first team player Paul Silcox returning after long term injury. Solent were missing Ian Manley (exams at University) and Alex Byrne (injured).

Mike Peel stepped up to a starting place and scored a 3 pointer to start the scoring. He also took his opportunity with relish and style leading the team with confidence, only spoiling it with silly fouls in the last quarter.

Solent started with confidence and built up an early lead of 16-8 before Watson picked up his second foul and left the floor. Silcox came on for Watson and Davison came in for his first taste of 3rd Division Basketball. James Chubb replaced Titcombe and the rhythm went out of the side and the Giants came back. Solent led 19-16 at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter was again very even but Solent having trouble scoring since Jon Rumsey left the side in November, scored 31 points (16 to Silcox and Davison between them). Gary Beale was prominent in defence and he converted two steals into points. But they could not shake off the dogged Giants, whose Maclean always was on hand to drive to the basket and he scored 32 points in the game.

50-40 became 71-51 at the end of the third after a very even third quarter. Only Titcombe 8, Silcox 9 and Davison 4 scored points for Solent, but the re-introduction of Watson invigorated Solent team and although he didn’t score he kept the team’s concentration level up.

In the last quarter Peel picked up two silly fouls to bring him onto foul number 4 and this disrupted the flow for a while but Carl Duke and Craig Teesdale held the backcourt together. Teesdale made some good defence splitting passes for assists.

Solent opened up what looked like a match winning lead of 16 points but once again a spirited rally from Gloucester brought the gap back to 85-77. A quick time out and some changes saw the comeback halted and Solent ran away with the game.

Teesdale 6, Peel 11, Peale 4, Titcombe 20, Chubb 2, Silcox 25, Davison 27, Duke 4 and Watson (Captain)

SOLENT STARS II 67
CARDIFF CLIPPERS 68

Solent went into this game needing to win to keep their playoff hopes alive, but were cruelly denied as the Cardiff player-coach Chris Horrocks scored a very difficult shot along the baseline with 13 seconds to go. This left Solent, never having been behind in the game, trailing by one point, 68-67.

Alex Byrne drove the ball up court and fed Steve Davison who put up a shot and it rolled twice around the ring and out. Game over.

Solent had travelled with only 7 players as first Ian Manley (ill) and then James Chubb (family bereavement) withdrew. Chris Watson was on the sidelines with an injured ankle.

Solent started brightly with Mike Peel and Craig Teesdale in the backcourt reading the game well. Carl Duke had epitomised the effort with a very hard-worked putback and some really tough defence as he closed down the dangerous shooter Jones. Solent scored quite easily off their set plays and looked very comfortable at both ends of the court. They led 17-12 at the quarter with everyone contributing, which was rounded off by a Gary Beale 3pointer.

When Cardiff threatened Solent went on 10-point spree without Cardiff scoring as Steve Davison found his range, with Peel finding his passes inside with accuracy.

At the start of the third quarter Byrne let loose a big three-pointer and then Solent extended their lead to 39-26 thanks to several good shots from John Titcombe. But Coach Mick Byrne left the 1-3-1-zone defence on too long and danger man Jones found his range and hit 4 three-pointers to drag Cardiff back into the game. Then Steve Davison went on a scoring spree of his own, hitting 11 points in a row so Solent went into the last quarter leading by 7.

When Solent snuffed out the threat from Jones by playing a box and 1 on him, Horrocks the Cardiff player-coach came into his own hitting 8 points and moving to play inside where he scored the winning basket.

Scorers: Teesdale 8, Peel 6, Beale 5, Davison 25,Titcombe 14, Duke 3, Byrne 6.
